How To Take Care of Succulents

Updated: Dec 7, 2022

Yeah, I remember my first succulent...

Actually, it was an aloe plant that a coworker gifted to me during a Secret Santa party. I put it on my windowsill and made sure that it got plenty of water. I knew that aloes were supposedly one of the easiest plants to care for but I couldn't seem to keep this thing alive! It wasn't until months later that I realized I was treating a desert plant like a rainforest plant. I was breaking the first rule of this guide...

1. Water Correctly: Overwatering succulents is one of the biggest mistakes people make when caring for these plants. They should only be watered when the soil is dry to the touch. Water deeply, and then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again.

2. Find the Right Place: Succulents prefer bright, indirect light and lots of airflow. Place your plants in a spot that gets plenty of sunlight but not direct sunlight. South-facing windows provide the perfect amount of light.

3. Trim Regularly: To encourage healthy growth, trim off any dead or yellowed leaves. This will help the plant look its best and will also help promote fresh growth.

4. Use the Right Soil: Succulents prefer well-draining soil. Look for a soil mix specifically designed for succulents and cacti.

5. Feed the Plant: Succulents need nutrients to thrive. Feed your plants with a liquid fertilizer once every month or two.

By following these simple steps, you can easily keep your succulents looking beautiful and healthy. With minimal care, these plants can bring a unique look and texture to your home.
